“Oh solitude of longing
where the love has been confined
come healing of the body
come healing of the mind”

~~~ Leonard Cohen from the song, Come Healing
This month we enter the realm of duality and the mind as the Sun flies through Gemini, the swiftest sign of the zodiac. Gemini, the sign of the twins is ruled by Mercury, the messenger of the Gods, also known as Hermes in Greek mythology. This sign presides over all divisions, as well as their potential healing.
The twins are a symbol among other things of the divided human mind, with its two lobes that serve opposite functions. The left or male brain, which rules the right side of the body analyzes and dissects, while the right or feminine brain, which controls the left side of the body deals with artistic and intuitive perception. It is interesting to note that in many western languages the word for right is associated with dexterity and superiority while the left or feminine side is described as awkward or downright sinister.
This devaluing and fear of the feminine runs throughout western culture, and is the central split that underlies most of our illness and self-destruction.
Here in the West, we have historically feared the feminine on all levels. We fear the dark, including the dark races, and value the light. We fear nature and seek to tame, control or wipe it out while we value civilization and development to the point of species extinction and nature’s depletion. We fear the night and keep the earth lit up and in ceaseless activity. We fear stillness and quiet, but value constant commentary.  We fear femininity and female sexuality but value masculine power and sexuality. We prize logic but fear our feelings. We prize the mind and devalue the body, unless it is as a commodity. We value youth but fear age, and finally, beneath every other fear is the fear of death, life’s dark twin sister.
All this fear has created unbalance and disease on an unprecedented scale. The good news is that astrologically, the God who brings the sickness is the God who brings the cure. Gemini’s ruler Mercury is in fact the God of healing and medicine. His staff of intertwined serpents called the caduceus is to this very day the symbol of the medical profession. What this tells us is that the balanced harmonious relationship between the feminine and masculine poles of creation is the key to health.
The word healing itself comes from the word whole. Wholeness comes from embracing one’s totality. Psychologically, much mental illness is a result of disowning one’s shadow qualities or feelings that we judge as dark and unacceptable. We then split off from these parts but they can very effectively control us from behind the scenes. Even our darkest urges have important lessons for us and properly integrated into our psyche, they can be tremendous sources of power and effectiveness.
Gemini points us back to sanity by suggesting that we simply get back into balance. The twins are equal and eternal. They are also entirely interdependent. The conscious mind reasons and directs, the subconscious builds our bodies and gives us intuitive guidance. Her highest function is to connect us to the divine, which cannot be directly perceived, but must be filtered through the subconscious. When they work together in harmony, the result is a healthy, balanced, intelligent, soulful, intuitive, empowered, surrendered, wild, cultured, and reasonable person and/or culture.
The twins also remind us that there can be no life without death. All forms must pass away so that new ones can arise. Our culture’s greatest weakness is our inability to really face this. Much of the incessant mental and nervous activity characteristic of this sign is I believe an attempt to distract ourselves from thoughts of our own mortality. Here we can rely upon Sagittarius, Gemini’s opposite sign, the most philosophical and well-traveled sign of the zodiac. Sagittarius can take us on philosophical journeys to explore how older, wiser cultures approach death and the spirit world of ancestors. This can give much needed meaning and depth and healing to an overly superficial culture.
Another message of Gemini is that the highest use of our minds is to connect us to the Higher mind, the Source of all ideas, brilliance and thought. Gemini reminds us that we are messengers, receivers and transmitters of intelligence that we are not the source of. Tapping in to the Source is what nourishes and heals us. In meditation we can still our minds of their incessant chatter and be healed by the silence and stillness and peace that are ever-present when we are quiet enough to perceive them.
This month seek to heal any splits in your life. All longing is longing for wholeness, the longing to be complete. While partnership can be lovely and fulfilling, this month work on healing imbalances within yourself. This will enable you to bring more to all your relationships. If you are overly intellectual try to spend time feeling your feelings. If you are overly nice explore your anger or what some of the not so nice voices in your head might have to teach you. If you live in your head get into your body. If you are always moving, slow down. If you have been too inert, get moving.
Most people in our culture could immediately become more balanced by getting quiet and spending time in nature. Turn off the cell phone. Spend time with the elderly, contemplating death, and feeling your feelings.  Get balanced by eating slowly, dancing, moving to rhythm, turning off the lights, making music or really listening to music, spending time in or around water, accepting yourself and others, being silent, actively listening, and letting things be. This month may you find healing of the body and healing of the mind.
The Sun went into Gemini on May 20th and will remain there till June 21st, the summer solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year when the Sun enters Cancer. After this day, the day force slowly begins to wane as we gradually lose moments of sunlight each day till the winter solstice in December which marks the longest night and shortest day of the year of the year.
The month begins with the Sun, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter all in communicative, mentally nimble and fleet-footed Gemini. On June 2nd Venus slides out of Gemini and into Cancer balancing our largely mental focus with a soulful feeling-approach to love this month. The remaining planets in the above mentioned line up remain in Gemini for most of the month.  This line up gives us oodles of mental energy, and makes communication and mental, philosophical expansion and exploration a major focus for all this month.
Mercury, the planet of communication and Gemini’s planetary ruler begins the month in soulful Cancer where it remains all month. This Mercury/Venus conjunction brings our loving mental focus to issues of home, family and nurturing.
