This month we return to our roots and ancestry as the Sun passes through Cancer and the incoming tide carries us home. Cancer is the sign of The Mother. Ruled by the moon, the feminine luminary, it is the sign associated with our personal mother as well as the Universal Mother in her oceanic aspect.
While we celebrate Mother’s day when the sun is passing through Taurus, an earth mother sign, in Cancer we are connected to the womb of life, and are reminded that all life began in the sea. We, at our roots are creatures of water who all began our lives swimming in our mothers womb. While we think of our bodies as solid earthy material, they too are overwhelmingly made of water. Our earth when viewed from space is a saphire blue planet, like our bodies, covered mostly by water.
Given our overwhelmingly watery roots it is strange how uncomfortable we are, especially here in the west, with water as an element. In the symbolic world, water represents the realm of feelings. As a culture we are extremely uncomfortable with feeling our feelings. Instead we live in our heads, an increasingly arrid realm of vapid texting, trivial pursuit, and mindless media, all of which serve as a grand distraction from our feelings. This superficial overidentification with the mind keeps us from truly connecting with our bodies, our souls, each other and the stunningly beautiful natural world that we call home. In a sense we are all homeless as long as we are running away from our bodies and our deep down feelings.
One reason we are so fearful of landing in our bodies, which is a sure way to connect with our souls (also ruled by Cancer and the Moon), is that we are certain to bump into unresolved pain from the past, often from childhood, which we all carry some degree of. Cancer the moon sign calls us home this month and asks us to go deep down to the roots of our being and feel what its like down there.
It can be a frightening prospect to explore and feel our feelings if we are unaccostomed to doing so. If we have unresolved trauma or abandonment issues we may need the safe containment of trusted friends, support groups or therapy in order to learn to feel and deal with old perhaps frightening feelings. Cancer, the sign of safty and containment teaches us how to create safe womblike environments in which we can feel and heal.
One way to gage how you are doing in the realm of feelings and comfort with your deepest self is notice any addictive behaviors you may engage in. These always serve as a way to medicate or distract us from feelings that we are afraid to deal with. Notice also how comfortable you are in your body. Cancer rules the the gut instinct. This month check in with your belly barometer to see how you are feeling at the gut level.
Cancer rules the home. Our earliest experiences with home affects our ability in later life to create a place of safety comfort and security. Check in with how you are doing in creating a safe and comforting nest to retreat into. Cancer is one of the somatic signs of the zodiac, and rules the body as a vehicle for the soul and for the Divine Self. Spend as much time as possible inhabiting your body. Cancer, the sign of the mother rules the breasts, womb and ovaries. It is the sign of feeding and protection. As a culture, despite our obsession with food, and the growing statistics on childhood and national obesity, we are on dreadful terms with food and real nurturing..We use food as a substitute for learning to sooth ourselves emotionally Despite our obsession with mom and apple pie we are also not on the best terms with the whole mother archetype. We expect too much from our mothers. They are expected to be all giving, always available and devoid of any needs of there own. This , I believe is due to our abandonment of the connection to a feminine aspect of God.
All ancient cultures recognized that God also has a feminine aspect. When we are properly connected to the Universal Mother and treat the natural world with reverence, and look to it for spiritual sustenance, it takes tremendous pressure off our biological mothers to be all knowing all giving, all nurturing.

The Sun entered Cancer on June 20th the summer solstice at 7:09 pm EST and will remain there until July 22 at 6:01 AM when the Sun enters flamboyant Leo. July begins with the Sun alone in Cancer, bringing our focus to issues of home ancestry, security and feelings. The month begins with the Sun in Cancer opposing Pluto in Capricorn for the first 4 days of the month, making it a time when we must deal with work life balance and ask ourselves whether our work is truly aligned with our souls true calling.
